Babel......AVOID

i was very curious about Babel as last 2 movies by alejandro inarritu were simply brilliant........and then i saw babel last night......
the movie was very long and very very boring......one of the worst ive ever seen......i think inarritu wanted to make a oscar winner (Crash concept) but came up with a dud......
cant believe this is from the same man who directed amores perros and 21 grams......

p.s. was going through the newspapers today and most of the reviews have given 3.5 or 4 stars to this movie.....crappppppp.......

Happy Feet........Superrrrrrrrrrr

i saw this movie last night and i was simply blown away.....easily one of the best non-disney or pixar production........
breathtaking visuals........the voice work is too goooood...... robin williams does three different characters and doesn't annoy.........
ecological message feels a bit forced and doesn't really mesh with the rest of the film.......

Casino Royale......shaken & stirred

and mr. bond is backkkkkkkkk......a more realistic and gritty bond.......bare knuckled, rough around the edges and a sociopathic killer.......the action in some scenes was outstanding...esp in the first 45mins.....
dont expect moneypenny, Q or loads of gadgets.....they are gone.
and what a great name for a bond villian......Le Chiffre.......
there are some real witty one liners.......bond tormenting his torturer with the one liner "now you can tell all your friends that you died scratching my balls"....
i wasnt expecting "Vesper Lynd: You're not going to let me in there. You've got your armour back on.
James Bond: I have no armour left. You've stripped it from me. Whatever is left of me - whatever I am - I'm yours " from mr. bond but he did it with so much ease......

its probably one of the best bond movies ever.........

am signing off with some memorable quotes from this amazing movie.....thanks to IMDB.....

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Vesper Lynd: If the only thing left of you was your smile and your little finger, you'd still be more of a man than anyone else.
James Bond: That's because you know what I can do with my little finger...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Vesper Lynd: I will be keeping my eyes on the money and off of your perfectly formed ass.
James Bond: You noticed.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
M: Christ, I miss the Cold War.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Vesper Lynd: Am I going to have a problem with you, Bond?
James Bond: No, don't worry. You're not my type.
Vesper Lynd: Smart?
James Bond: Single.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Steven Obanno: Do you believe in God, Mr. Le Chiffre?
Le Chiffre: No, I believe in a reasonable rate of return.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bartender: Shaken or stirred?
James Bond: Do I look like I give a damn?

Friends of Men....

Men always have better friends...They will stand by you,no matter what!

Friends of Women:

A wife was not at home for a whole night. So she tells her husband,
the very next morning, that she stayed at her (girl) friend's
apartment overnight. So the husband calls 10 of her best (girl)
friends and none of them confirm that she was with them.

Friends of Men:

A husband was not at home for a whole night. So he tells his wife
the very next morning, that he stayed at his friend's apartment over
night. So the wife calls 10 of his best friends and 5 of them
confirm that he stayed at their apartments that night and another 5
are claiming that he is still with them...

men love their toys.... really funny

Had to share this...too good.....

Following is the e-mail sent to an Agony Aunt column for personal advice by
one of our kind of fellas...

Hope its Good humour for you too:-

Dear Abby,

I've never written to you before, but I really need your advice on what
could be a crucial decision. I've suspected for some time now that my wife
has been cheating on me.

The usual signs... phone rings but if I answer, the caller hangs up. My wife
has been going out with the girls a lot recently although when I ask their
names she always says, "Just some friends from work, you don't know them."

I always stay awake to look out for her taxi coming home, but she always
walks down the drive. Although I can hear a car driving off, as if she has
gotten out of the car round the corner. Why? Maybe she wasn't in a taxi? I
once picked her cell phone up just to see what time it was and she went
berserk and screamed that I should never touch her phone again and why was I
checking up on her.

Anyway, I have never approached the subject with my wife. I think deep down
I just didn't want to know the truth, but last night she went out again and
I decided to really check on her.

I decided I was going to park my Harley Davidson motorcycle next to the
garage and then hide behind it so I could get a good view of the whole
street when she came home. It was at that moment, crouching behind my
Harley, that I noticed that the valve covers on my engine seemed to be
leaking a little oil.

Is this something I can fix myself or should I take it back to the dealer?

Thanks,

Stuart

My Uncle Shelby Fav....

still on Shel Silverstein.....lines below are one of my favorites from his works.....

Tell me I'm clever,
Tell me I'm kind,
Tell me I'm talented,
Tell me I'm cute,
Tell me I'm sensitive, Graceful and wise,
Tell me I'm perfect-- But tell me the truth.

Shel Silverstein - Where the Sidewalk Ends

I was so sure that no one has heard of Shel Silverstein or his works in India..........till i saw few lines from one of his better/famous works "Where the Sidewalk Ends" on my friend Ekta's status bar on Google Talk..........and then me and Ekta spent a good 20mins discussing Silverstein and his works........let me share the opening invitation from "Where the Sidewalk Ends".........

If you are a dreamer, come in.......
If you are a dreamer, a wisher, a liar,.......
A hope-er, a pray-er, a magic bean buyer . . .
If you're a pretender, come sit by my fire,.......
For we have some flax golden tales to spin.......
Come in!......
Come in!.......

The Departed - Classic Scorsese

unspeakable violence.......as much implied as seen........now that's vintage Scorsese..... violence is one of the things Scorsese does best........

the original bad boy Jack Nicholson as Frank Costello does his best work in years.......he just enjoys being the bad guy.........Leonardo DiCaprio in an author backed role is just about perfect.....Scorsese is getting the best of him......first the aviator and now this........i would have loved to see more of Martin Sheen & Mark Wahlberg...........Matt Damon was a perfect choice for his role.....i personally feel that he should stop doing the Bourne series.....he is a misfit for movies as those........

this movie is in the same league as the other Scorsese classics such as the taxi driver, raging bull, cape fear, good fellas..............the departed grips and shocks and entertains........i loved it......

Virtue needs some cheaper thrills.....my fav....

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening

Yet another favorite......its by Robert Frost...

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village, though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Classic?.....R U kidding me?

Its a hot sunday afternoon in delhi and am watching VH1 on the telly.....

a small question......why is VH1 showing songs from early 90's in their show titled VH1 classic?

I've always had a soft corner for music from 80's but its just not there on VH1.....

Gimme 60's, 70's & 80's..........

KANK - Alvida.....

So long for the mature subject......No Comments....

Sunday, August 20, 2006

Zed's dead, baby. Zed's dead....

Its a lazy sunday afternoon and am watching "Pulp Fiction " for the Nth time on Star Movies....

Can't forget Jules' "And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers."

The movie to me is,as Rosanna Arquette remarks "That was f****** trippy".

Cars.....Vrooooooooooom !!!

i saw a feelgood kind of movie last nite....yet another one from the Disney Pixar stable. .....

While the story may not reach the high standards of Toy Story , Finding Nemo and The Incredibles, the movie is a must watch for all ages.....

The Dekalog - A Masterpiece....

Last night, i met up with few friends from NID over dinner and all of us ended up watching "The Dekalog" by the Polish director Krzysztof Kieslowski (of "the three colors trilogy" fame).......

Kieslowski found inspiration in the 10 commandments, and made a series of films exploring each one........ naturally, this is some heavy stuff.......in some cases, it's really heavy stuff.

The series is Kieslowski's most acclaimed work.....typically for Kieslowski, the tone of most of the stories is meditative and melancholy except the last one which is more of a black comedy......

I've seen and enjoyed the color trilogy (blue, white, red) , the double life of veronique, a short film about killing and a short film about love by Kieslowski in the past but Dekalog has been by far the best........a true masterpiece……

Omkara - The Bard Rocks....

Its official.....The Bard still rockssssssssss.....

I remember reading Othello as a play and a subject in school and my father always insisted that Shakespeare is cool.....and today, i agree with him without any doubt....

"Then must you speak
of one that loved not wisely
but too well;
Of one not easily jealous,
but being wrought
perplex'd in the extreme"

Let me introduce the characters to you....

Ajay Devgan : Othello
Kareena Kapoor : Desdemona
Saif : Iago
Konkona Sen Sharma: Emilia
Deepak Dobyiyal : Rodrigo

Probably one of the finest adaptations....Vishal Bharadwaj has livedup to the expectations after Maqbool.....

Ajay Devgan was expected to be intense as Omkara as he always is in most of his movies.....

3 characters caught my fancy.......Saif, Konkona & Deepak.......never expected saif to comeup with such a performance but surprise surprise!, he has set a benchmark so high for himself after this....

The most natural character portrayed in the movie was Konkana's.....she is a fine actress and i would rate her better than Saif in the movie......

Deepak Dobriyal's character as Iago's friend and as a suitor rejected by Kareena's character was simply fantastic......another brilliant performer in the making, i guess......

The movie is a must watch.......100 points to the director for his keen sense of adaptation.

P.S. Im totally hooked on to the song called "Namak"......one of the naughtiest songs ive ever heard......

Lady in the Water

After watching "Sideways", i became a Paul Giamatti fan and still remain after watching this dud of a movie....he is an accompalished actor and most importantly a director's actor.....

Most of us agree on Shyamalan's talent as a filmmaker, this movie makes you realise not to expect too much from a director based upon his earlier ventures.....

Once the movie ended, i thought "really? that was it?"

Go and watch the movie if you are an ardent Shyamalan fan...

Yun Hota Toh Kya hota

What a wonderful movie....it cud've been.....

I enjoyed the movie but maybe, i was expecting something more from Naseeruddin Shah.

To me, the only character who outdid others and himself was Paresh Rawal. For a gujju to "act" like a gujju can be a real challenge, i suppose.....

Not a bad movie for a first time director ;o)

My freedom of expression?

Thanks to the Govt., i was unable to access my blogspot and i so badly wanted to write about the 3 movies i saw last week......Omkara, Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota & Lady in the Water.

so, im baaaaaaaaaaaaack......

Golmal - Fun Unlimited

A "fulltoo" entertaining movie.....i found it to be very hilarious in bits & pieces.

and finally, i saw a spark of brillinace in Tushhar Kapoor.......

The spoof on Black was simply fantastic....

a must watch......

The Man - Surprise! Surprise!

saw The Man last nite.....and was a sheer delight to watch....
not boasting of big names, relying on sharp, at times cheeky humour, this movie is worth a watch.....

Saturday, July 08, 2006

Corporate - Bingo!!!

Saw Corporate last night.......i cud relate to most of the characters of the movie...including the politicians......a good watch....

Rajat Kapoor is turning out to be a better actor than KayKay Menon........

Saturday, June 24, 2006

Krishh.....Shhhhhhhh

Saw Krishh last night....what a big let down.....
the only saving grace: Naseeruddin Shah.......

X-Men 3 & Da Vinci Code -

This weekend has been really great.....last nite i saw X-Men 3 and i just came back after watching Da Vinci Code....

And the common link in both the movies is......Sir Ian Mckellen.......what a fantabulous actor that he is........
Magneto in X-Men and Sir Leigh in Da Vinci Code.....he is at his finest......

X-Men 3 was out and out action flick with not much substance, yet an entertainer.....

If you want to enjoy Da Vinci Code, do not compare it to the book.....
Like i said, Sir Ian Mckellen makes this movie worth a must watch.....
i loved Audrey Tautou in and as Amelie' but i felt that she is not Sophie Neveu in Da Vinci Code....a serious disconnect.....

BTW, this movie is two and a half hours long so please stock up your popcorns........

Thursday, May 25, 2006

Holy Trinity...

Am planning to watch Fanaa, Da Vinci Code & X-Men 3 this weekend.....should be fun....

Btw, Whats Da Vinci Code called in punjabi...........Vinci Da Code...... :o)

Cheaper By the Dozen -2.....Steve Martin Rocks.....

The classic Steve Martin is back...reminds me of Roxxane, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, etc...a surprisingly and refreshingly funny flick.....

and whats wrong with Hillary Duff? She has gone so skinny that she looks "ugly"........

Saturday, May 06, 2006

36 China Town - EWWWWWWWW

Y? Y? Y?......am such a sucker for movies that i always end up watching seriously thakela movies........and this movie was no exception.....

but loved the song Aa Aa Aashiqi mei teri.....

The Pink Panther - DAMNBURGOR

pls pls pls do not compare Steve Martin to the great Peter Sellers.......

Steve Martin has a very different approach to this role but portraying the same idiot with finesse.....

A very funny movie indeed with some genuine funny moments...

ENJOY THE DAMNBURGOR....hahahahahhahahahahah

Darna Zaroori Hai..........

saw Darna Zaroori Hai last nite and i must admit, im impressedddddd.......i went for it keeping its prequel Darna Mana Hai in mind but it surpassed all my expectations.........Finally, this genre has arrived.....

Manoj Pahwa proves yet again that he is a comic genius.....we need to see more of him.....

Very very expected and brilliant acting by Amitabh and ably supported by Ritesh Deshmukh....

Now the surprise package.......ANIL KAPOOR........I think this was probably one of his best acts......the expression of fear on his face was never portrayed so naturally before.......

Personally, am getting tired of watching Rajpal Yadav in monotony.....he has become too predictable......did not enjoy that segment.....

The movie is a MUST WATCH.......finally, no more Ramsey Brothers Movies.........Praise the Lord :op

Sunday, April 16, 2006

Basic Instinct - 2

just came back after watching the much awaited Basic Instinct-2...........all i can say is, AVOID.......

Saturday, April 15, 2006

What a Day!!!!!.......Munich & Syriana

i decided to take advantage of the fact that i live near PVR and it was a holiday on account of Good Friday and made an effort to watch Munich & Syriana...... apparently, a lot of other people had the same idea and all the shows were sold out...... thank god for internet booking......6 Hours back to back viewing of good cinema.......both the movies make strong but lopsided political comments.....choose your loyalties.....

Munich is an eye-opener...It is a story of what happened after the murder of 11 Israeli athletes at Munich Olympics in 1972......the Israelis set up an assassination squad to kill the people behind the attack........ The group is led by Eric Bana who plays the character of Avner....... the film tells the story of the exploits of the squad....

a movie that asks difficult questions.....The best example of this was a sentimentalized conversation between Avner and a PLO terrorist......

a film of uncommon depth, intelligence, and sensitivity.....and a must watch.......

Syriana is about the U.S. government and how that government will stop at nothing to ensure the future of its business interests.......
there are no answers here......and not even many questions......just a brutal portrait of the facts....its a powerful film, but a cold one.....

one of the best geopolitical thrillers in a very long time..........

Thursday, April 13, 2006

Back to Back Friday.....

Tomorrow should be an interesting day....am watching 2 movies back to back....Munich & Syriana........am so looking forward to both of them......

Friday, April 07, 2006

Shaadi Se Pehle - neverrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...

coming from the same stable which gave us Iqbal, this movie gave me the headache of my life...had to leave just after the intermission......very old gags, jokes and limericks....i have been an ardent Subhash Ghai Fan but this movie is soooooooo "thakela".....

Thursday, April 06, 2006

V for Stay Away...

saw V for Vendetta last nite and i dozed off after the first 25minutes......

Saturday, March 25, 2006

Being Cyrus - A Welcome Change

Saw Being Cyrus last nite.....the movie brings out the dark sides of some seemingly ordinary characters who eventually go to unbelievable lengths to achieve their goals....we need more movies of this genre....

Came to know from some newspaper that the movie has been re-edited by Jon Harris who edited Guy Richie's cult classic Snatch........

Naseeruddin Shah is at his best and Boman Irani's performance is simply superb.....But Manoj Pahwa takes the cake as Inspector Lovely.....funny funny funny...

A Must Watch !!!

In a Gondola - Robert Browning

one of my fav poems.....i find this one really sensuous.......

In a Gondola
by Robert Browning

The moth's kiss, first!
Kiss me as if you made believe
You were not sure, this eve,
How my face, your flower, had pursed
Its petals up; so, here and there
You brush it, till I grow aware
Who wants me, and wide open I burst.

The bee's kiss, now!
Kiss me as if you enter'd gay
My heart at some noonday,
A bud that dares not disallow
The claim, so all is rendered up,
And passively its shattered cup
Over your head to sleep I bow.

Crash - Absolutely Fantastic

just came back after watching much talked about movie Crash.....this is what you call good cinema ....several stories interweave during two days in Los Angeles involving a collection of inter-related characters...many of the scenes display racism, but the focus is on an incident before that triggered emotions such as rage, fear, and hatred.....a must watch....

Dilli Haat

went to dilli haat yesterday.....love the food there.....

One Art - Elizabeth Bishop

One Art

The art of losing isn't hard to master;
so many things seem filled with the intent
to be lost that their loss is no disaster.

Lose something every day. Accept the fluster
of lost door keys, the hour badly spent.
The art of losing isn't hard to master.

Then practice losing farther, losing faster:
places, and names, and where it was you meant
to travel. None of these will bring disaster.

I lost my mother's watch. And look! my last, or
next-to-last, of three loved houses went.
The art of losing isn't hard to master.

I lost two cities, lovely ones. And, vaster,
some realms I owned, two rivers, a continent.
I miss them, but it wasn't a disaster.

---Even losing you (the joking voice, a gesture
I love) I shan't have lied. It's evident
the art of losing's not too hard to master
though it may look like (Write it!) like disaster.

-- Elizabeth Bishop

i carry your heart with me - e.e. cummings

i carry your heart with me

i carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)
i fear
no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want
no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)

My Fav Poem : IF by Rudyard Kipling

If

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on";

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!

--Rudyard Kipling

Being Alive.....

"For man, the vast marvel is to be alive. For man, as for flower, beast and bird, the supreme triumph is to be most vividly, most perfectly alive.

Whatever the unborn and the dead may know, they cannot know the beauty, the marvel of being alive in the flesh. The dead may look after the afterwards. But the magnificient here and now of life in the flesh is ours, and ours alone, and ours only for a time. We ought to dance with rapture that we should be alive and in flesh, and part of the living, incarnate cosmos.

I am part of the sun as my eye is part of me. That I am part of the earth my feet know perfectly, and my blood is part of the sea. My soul knows that I am part of the human race, my soul is an organic part of the great human soul, as my spirit is part of the nation. In my own very self I am part of my family.

There is nothing of me that is alone and absolute except my mind, and we shall find that the mind has no existence by itself, it is only the glitter of the sun on the surface of the waters."

Firewall not so 'secure'

Saw the new Harrison Ford starrer Firewall yesterday.....it turned out to be a pretty lame movie....nuttin more to say......

Taxi No. 9.2.11 ROCKS.....

saw Taxi No. 9.2.11 on friday.....a good dark comedy.....Its just that i dont subscribe to Nana Patekar's style of acting...i find it monotonous......but one scene in which he breaks down in front of his family before the movie ends simply proves how good an actor he is without shouting , howling and throwing his hands all over.....
